Key Visual Indicators of AI Images: How to Spot Deepfakes

1. Facial Features and Anatomy

AI often struggles with human faces and anatomy, especially in complex or less-central subjects.

  • Puffy or asymmetrical eyes: Look for under-eye bags that are unnaturally smooth, inflated, or mirrored.
  • Teeth and smiles: AI frequently generates too many teeth or perfectly spaced ones.
  • Ears: Often mismatched in size, shape, or placement.
  • Hands and fingers: One of the most common giveaways. Watch for:

* Too many or too few fingers

* Fingers that bend strangely or merge together

* Jewelry or nail polish that's inconsistent between fingers

  • Eyewear: Glasses that don’t sit correctly on the face or have missing/warped frames.

2. Background Artifacts

While some models are getting better, the background is often the weakest link.

  • Asymmentric elements: Mirrors don't work as expected. Daily objects that should be symmetric, are not.
  • Cloned or repeated elements: Trees, fence posts, tiles, people, or objects duplicated in unnatural patterns.
  • Warped text or signs: AI typically fails to generate legible, consistent text in images.
  • Melting architecture: Doors, windows, or walls that blur or bend into one another.
  • Distorsion in background crowds: Distorted faces. Arms or legs that appear without a full body attached.

3. Objects and Props

AI models have trouble rendering objects with precision.

  • Broken or melted tools, instruments, or items: Look closely at musical instruments, phones, food, or vehicles.
  • Straps, bags, or wires: These often vanish into clothing or float unnaturally.
  • Inconsistent shadows: Shadows that don't match the light source or float away from the object.

4. Clothing and Textures

Fabric and fine detail are frequent failure points.

  • Clothing overlaps: Garments often melt into skin or merge with other layers.
  • Inconsistent logos or patterns: Check for logos that look like gibberish.
  • Textures: Denim, fur, or lace that looks painted on, blurry, or uneven.

5. Lighting and Depth

AI has trouble understanding how light behaves in a 3D space.

  • Light sources that don’t match: Harsh shadows without a visible light source, or inconsistent lighting across faces and objects.
  • Lack of depth: Everything may appear flat or have awkward spacing between foreground and background.
  • Unnatural glow: A soft, misty haze over the image that feels dreamlike or synthetic.
